Channa Daal (yellow split lentil)

This super fast simple channa daal dish is an absolute favourite for my youngest son! It is quite to so and I ten to make it without onions (my son hates onions!). Freel free to add onions for a thicker gravy.

This yellow lentil ie. channa daal is soft and buttery and has a sweet nutty flavour. A delicately spiced lentil curry which can be enjoyed with roti (chapatti)
Ingredients

1/2 cup channa daal
1 tbsp oil
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp coarse black pepper
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp chilli powder
1 tbsp coriander and cumin powder
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
fresh chopped coriander for garnishing
1/2 tsp garam masala for tarka
1/2 tin of plum tomatoes liquidised / blended

Instructions

Soak 1/2 cup of daal for a few hours
Heat the oil in a pan and add the salt, pepper and spices except for garam masala and fresh coriander
Roast these for a few minuntes until the aroma is released
Add the tomato puree and cook on high heat for a couple of minutes
Add one cup of water the daal washed and drained
Simmer for 40 minutes until the daal is soft and can be easily broken between two fingers
For the tarka / tempering, heat one tbsp of oil in a pan, add the garam masala, 1 tsp cumin seeds until heated. Pour this over the daal and server with a garnish of coriander.
